Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner review

A stick-format stick vacuum with several cyclones to separate air and dust, does that remind you of anything? Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner follows in Dyson‘s footsteps and tames multicyclonic technology; but do cyclones really do it all?

Presentation Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

The Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is a stick-format stick vacuum cleaner, produced by Xiaomi and one of the most striking features of which is to offer multicyclonic filtration, when the vast majority of other models (except Dyson models) are on board cyclonic filtration only. Launched at $249, it is however much less expensive than its British competitors. Equipped with a soft brush, but without a classic brush with more rigid bristles, it is intended mainly for hard surfaces or fine carpets, which it will vacuum for 30 minutes, promises the technical sheet.

Convenience of employment

If Xiaomi was inspired by the technology developed by Sir James Dyson for its new stick vacuum cleaner, this is not the case for the aesthetics; the varied and garish colors of the English vacuum cleaners respond to the discreet white and orange of the Chinese model. Nevertheless, we find the so-called “stick” architecture with the engine block, the waste bin and the filtration system placed close to the user’s hand. This deported center of gravity allows the Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner to be handled with ease to vacuum the floor or furniture, shelves or any other furniture item placed at a height.

As is always the case with stick-format stick vacuums, a wall mount is required for storage; Admittedly, the latter is not obligatory – one can always store the device even if the base is not installed – but one gains a lot in convenience of use by using it. What is more, that of the Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is well designed since it is provided with a male plug to be connected to the body of the machine. So just put the vacuum cleaner on it – and pull it down – to start charging. This is not always the case and some models (like the Delonghi Colombina Smart have to be hooked up and then plugged in, which is much less practical.

The Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner weighs 2.52 kg in its floor suction version, i.e. equipped with the suction tube and motorized head. Obviously, it is much lighter when equipped with a nozzle or a furniture brush (only 1.57 kg). This weight is in line with the average of other stick-format stick vacuum cleaners in our comparison and this model should therefore not weigh too much at the end of the arm, even during a prolonged cleaning session.
The small brush is also motorized.

Instead of a simple on / off switch, the manufacturer chose a trigger to hold to suck. Of course, this requires a muscular effort not to stop the suction, but in return, the autonomy of the Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is prolonged. Indeed, when the pressure on the trigger is released, the vacuum cleaner consumes nothing: practical when you have to move a piece of furniture, answer the phone … Some models, including the Black + Decker Smarttech FEJ520JFS, must be turned off manually and , under these circumstances, it is often easier to leave the vacuum cleaner running, which wastes energy for nothing.

Still in terms of autonomy, note that the Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner does not carry any remaining charge indicator. He just warns that he is reaching the end of his capacities thanks to a red diode, but all this remains a little rough for our taste. We’re a long way from the Dyson V11 and its down-to-the-second estimates.

The Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner of course benefits from a turbo mode that is activated by a switch, which must be pressed again to deactivate this option. You can also stop the aspiration and resume it, which has the same effect.

The Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner box also contains a motorized mini-brush, a long nozzle and a crevice tool

Clean

The Clean of the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner should not be a problem.

The bin is emptied by pushing the button located at the base of the receptacle. As is the case with many stick vacuums, the bottom opens and lets dust and debris fall into the trash. This ingenious method avoids having to get your hands dirty.

The entire Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner can be dismantled very easily, starting with the removal of the waste bin, by operating the slide under the engine block. Once this element has been removed, the initial filter can be unscrewed to thoroughly clean it and access the foam filter. The HEPA filter, for its part, is located at the top of the device. To access it, simply unscrew the cover which overhangs the filtration unit; nothing very complicated in short.

To get rid of hairs and hair that may have become entangled in the rotating brush, simply remove it from the suction head. We replace it without firing a shot.

The multi-cyclonic filtration of the Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is very effective. Indeed, after the absorption of 20 grams of cocoa powder and a few seconds of operation so that the material can circulate well in the device, we weighed the HEPA filter, the last bulwark before the air came out of the machine. .

Filtration

This one did not gain weight, proof that all the chocolate powder is well confined in the trash bin. This means that there is no risk of dust being released into the air during vacuuming, which could have been a real annoyance for people with allergies and a limitation for vacuuming.

Suction

If not on long-pile carpet, the suction performance of the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is satisfactory.

On this surface, the Xiaomi stick vacuum cleaner only sucks up 62% of the trash in two minutes when used at normal power; as much to say that it is useless at this level of power and on this type of ground. By switching on the turbo mode the results are a little better, but there is still 27% rice in the loops of our high pile carpet, so 73% was picked up.

The Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner works best on fine carpets. The soft brush allows it to recover 100% of the waste in one minute (98% in 30 seconds). These results are quite the same, whether you vacuum at minimum suction power or activate turbo mode.

Finally, on hard ground, 100% of the waste is vacuumed in 30 seconds at minimum power, but only 97% at maximum power; this difference is explained by the tendency of the soft brush to push the waste backwards on this surface when it turns too fast.

As can be seen, except on long pile carpets, the normal mode is quite sufficient; and so much the better, since it extends autonomy.

Autonomy

The Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner can vacuum for 30 minutes according to the manufacturer’s promises. It will however be necessary to be satisfied with 28 min 30 s; a difference which can be explained by the presence of the turbobrush during our tests and which is not active during the manufacturer’s measurements.

In max mode, the autonomy drops to only 8 min 30 s, which makes the Handheld Vacuum Cleaner one of the least enduring stick vacuum cleaners in our comparison in this configuration.

However, it is a matter of weighing these results since, let us remember, the power supply system of this model is made to minimize energy expenditure.

Noise

For a stick vacuum cleaner, the Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is rather discreet. The sound level reaches 61 dB (A) at normal power and does not exceed 64 dB (A) when the max mode is engaged. By way of comparison, the Proscenic P8 is much noisier since we measured 71 dB (A) and 74 dB (A) respectively under the same conditions.

Summary

Other than if you live in a household that is completely covered with rugs or high pile carpeting, there is no real reason not to consider purchasing the Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner when you purchase it. ‘purchase. However, you must be careful not to force the rotating brush too much, otherwise it will get stuck a little too easily. However, this handicap is erased by the ease of maintenance of this stick vacuum cleaner with a remarkable performance / price ratio and which could have become a must, if only Xiaomi had had the good idea to provide an additional brush for surfaces to long hairs.
