NEW Design For The Newest Canon camera 2022-2022 !
Canon’s Cinema range (C100, C200, C300, C500, C700) historically offers a fairly long design allowing the addition of modules and batteries to the rear of the camera and easy balancing of the whole. shoulder or on tripods… even when using long CN-type lenses.

A 0.71x adapter capable of providing the camera’s S35 sensor with the viewing angle of a … full-frame sensor! All this while saving a further light stop and almost without compromising on the quality of the autofocus! There is a concession to be made: the coverage of the Dual Pixel then goes from 80% to 60% of the sensor.

To be clear: The Super 35 applies a crop factor of 1.46x over full frame. The EF-RF 0.71x mount adapter allows so-called “full frame” lenses to recover their original angle of view … pretty much because it remains a crop factor of 1.03x!
While waiting for the necessary updates, this system is currently only compatible with 3 lenses from the EF range: the EF 24-70 f / 2.8, EF 24-105 f / 4 and EF 16- 35 f / 2.8.
XF-AVC, THE FORMAT OF TRUST
Canon is showcasing its in-house format by offering the XF-AVC (H-264) at the heart of the Menu’s most advanced “recording qualities”. It is therefore available for 4: 2: 2 10 bits whether in All intra or Long-GOP. Rest assured, H-265 fans, this 10-bit 4: 2: 2 is also available in HEVC format (but only in Long GOP). As for the 4: 2: 0 8 bits, it is available in this good old H-264 but still in Long GOP
On the sound side, we find the same type of “constraints”: while linear PCM sound (24bits / 48kHz / 4 channels) is only accessible in MXF, the same sound falls to 16bits in MP4, the format where the lightest MPEG 2 AAC LC (16bits / 48kHz / 2ch) is also available.
In the best case, the maximum authorized speed remains capped at 410 Mbs.
As for the capabilities of the HDMI output, we know that a maximum flow in 4K 60fps 4: 2: 2 10 bits is possible.
No RAW in sight for the moment. According to Canon, the RAW format, much more complex to manage in terms of support and post-production, is reserved for higher productions. Still in the words of the Japanese, the XF-AVC associated with 16 stops of dynamic range, in addition to being well supported by all post-production players, offers a good balance between image quality, weight of files and working latitude in colorimetry.
Important information: Regardless of the video format you choose, there is no recording limit. Only the autonomy and the space available on the media are decisive. Overheating problems, if you think about it, are the prerogative of another category of devices …
The C70 comes with a BP-A30 battery. The same model as on a C200 or C300. But the new small camera does better than its comrades when it comes to battery life. The videographer Giannis Saroukos indeed reports that where his C200 held 120 minutes in 8 bits and 100 minutes in RAW, the C70 takes around 200 minutes with the BP-A30.
For its part, the British specialist cvp.com measured the autonomy of the C70 through a few tests which allowed it to observe the following results:
In 4096 x 2160 at 50 fps with BP-A30 battery: 175 minutes of recording
In 2048 x 1080 at 50 fps (S16) with BP-A30 battery: 205 minutes of recording
There is also a BP-A60 compatible with the EOS C70.
You may have immediately noticed it in the first visuals of the device: the C70 has large vents concealing a set of fans dedicated to cooling the beast. For those who are afraid of the possibility of extraneous noise during recording, know that Canon has done it right, on paper at least: an “Always ON” mode keeps the ventilation running while an “Automatic” mode manages the fresh air requirements on its own. Thus, as far as possible, the ventilation is stopped during each recording and then resumed … between 2 shoots.
2 INNOVATIVE UHD-II SLOTS
No CFexpress in the C70 but 2 SD card readers. This is enough to handle the 4K delivered by the sensor. Canon encourages however to prefer UHS-II SD cards with the V90 logo in order to ensure proper management of the maximum speed of 410Mbs …
Where this duo of slots innovates is in its ability to manage (in addition to classic relay writing) simultaneous recording at 2 resolutions and 2 different codecs! We will thus be able to have 4K All-i on card A and 2K Long-GOP on card B… This ultra-flexible character can prove to be very practical for content that must be used in 2 very different worlds, for example example Broadcast and social networks.
NEXT GENERATION RF AND AUTOFOCUS MOUNT
The EOS C70 brings the new RF mount to the professional world. Allowing more compact, lighter, brighter, better stabilized and smarter lenses, the RF mount is now systematically associated with a new generation autofocus.
This Dual AF, much appreciated by Canonists (and others), is now faster and smarter. Its face tracking and recognition system, inaugurated in the R range, joins the C range to the delight of documentary filmmakers, journalists and other videographers. Even better than on the R range: the subject turns his head 180 ° or disappears from the field? No longer matters: Canon’s autofocus system finds what it needs to hunt without flinching! The AF of the C70 therefore outclasses that of the C200 and C300!
However, this “new gen” AF lacks a little refinement. A feature still reserved for EOS R5 and R6: eye tracking, whether human or animal … Another limit not to be overlooked: if the autofocus works up to 120 fps, it is then cut off. his recognition and face tracking. At 180 fps, it’s worse since the AF is no longer in the game …
INTEGRATED ND FILTER
This is one of the good surprises of the C70! In such a small box, the Japanese manufacturer has managed to integrate a variable ND filter with 10 stops: the values 0, 2, 4 and 6 stops as standard and the values 8 and 10 stops in extended mode.
This “feat” achieved at the cost of a total redesign of the mechanism largely contributes to the professional character of the camera.
It’s a little disappointment. Certainly, a so-called professional camera is historically devoid of any mechanical stabilization. Thus, no risk of movement when the IBIS, sensitive to jolts, is off …
There is therefore an electronic IBIS which operates on 5 axes when it alone ensures the stabilization of the planes. But associated with a Canon IS lens, the optical stabilization of the lens literally collaborates with the electronics of the body with an intelligent distribution of the work: the optics stabilizes on 2 axes while the electronic IBIS manages the other 3 axes.
This electronic stabilization comes at a price, however. Always the same to tell the truth: the 4K sensor is cut off from the 10% of surface necessary for the compensation …
NO 8K NOR 6K …
The EOS C70 is an entry-level camera and let’s face it, 4K is now the “high standard” in the TV and film industry. We would have liked a 6K offering a nice cropping margin but this comfort must certainly remain the prerogative of more advanced models in Canon’s marketing logic. The manufacturer with the red border defends itself by ensuring that half of the films nominated for the 2022 Oscars were shot in 4K … or less!
In short ! According to Canon, any resolution that is beyond 4K should be reserved for high-end productions. We are not going to contradict this argument as the resources required in 8k are so demanding (CFExpress cards, high-end hard disks, overpowered editing machines, etc.).
… BUT 4K 120FPS AND 2K 180FPS
The C70 user will enjoy a 4K DCI of up to 100fps (PAL) and 120fps (ntsc) with a maximum bitrate of 410Mbs. Filming at 180 fps (ntsc) will be possible but at the cost of a degradation of resolution which then tops out at 2K. In all cases, sound recording and Dual AF are included! Small flat all the same: if the 4K remains in “full format” (Super 35) whatever the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50, 60, 120), an S16 type crop is required for the 180 fps!
Given the positioning of the EOS C70, this performance can be considered reasonable. We can even imagine a C50 a little less generous with a disappearance of slow motion
NO SIGHT …
Canon gives up the viewfinder! According to the Japanese manufacturer, more and more users prefer the touch screen for framing and everything that goes with it: focus, exposure, etc. The orientable screen of the EOS C70 thus allows customization of the display and quick access to functions which have been specially reorganized for this Cinema range. Access to all the settings and key functions of the camera (ISO, shutter, aperture, ND filter, peaking, REC, Pause, etc.) is possible with 1 click.
Canon adds that this 3.5-inch diagonal (2.76MPx) OLED screen, adjustable in brightness, is more qualitative and more sensitive than on current cameras …
This absence is all the less annoying as it can be circumvented by connecting an EVF to HDMI.
Something “Pro” has to be missing from this professional … entry-level camera, let’s remember. Nothing shocking about the lack of SDI output. This type of connection is useful on large productions or on set. The C70 is more dedicated to solo filming, a context in which the Full HDMI output is more than sufficient for external monitoring or recording. The same can be said of the XLR inputs which “content themselves” with a mini format.
Canon C70 VS C200
We said in the introduction: the EOS C70 creates a bridge between DSLR and professional camera. However, this new range will suffice for many professionals. All the same, the C200 still has ergonomics (viewfinder, grip, etc.) and a pro-type form factor as well as a recording in RAW which can in itself be decisive.
C200 (and C300) users are particularly sensitive to form factor and access to camera controls. A swiveling grip, a well-placed EVF or high modularity make Canon’s professional cameras ideal tools for long shoots from the shoulder or on feet.
Thus, if the C70 is a small camera with few compromises, it should appeal to many directors and videographers from all walks of life as long as their requirements include professional quality and agility. But many owners of C200 or C300 will only turn it into a B camera!
Compared to the C200, the C70 offers better ISO and dynamic range (on paper), significantly improved AF, a “full frame” option that does not exist elsewhere (except at the stratospheric price of the C500) which provides 1 additional stopper, this which is huge.
Other advantages of the C70 compared to the C200: the display of “false Color” or a LUT, a frame rate of 120 fps in 4K without cropping and… a Bit Depth in 4: 2: 2 10 bits, the great absent from the venerable C200!
Operational in 3 seconds after ignition, the C70 will be docile on a Ronin S, on a drone or in a confined place. It is natively open to the RF Optics Park and is far better protected against dust and water than any other C-Series camera.
Price question, the two devices are quite close. The C70 is offered at $4,500.00 , $5,400.00 . The C200 is available for around $6,000.00 (with screen and handle).
CANON C70 Vs SONY A7SIII
Full-frame sensor, high-performance AF, low-light capabilities, RAW available externally,… The characteristics of the small Sony box seem to surpass those of the C70 for a price twice as low…
However, make no mistake about it! The Sony Hybrid is still a photo-type camera. And if the C70 is only a “bridge” leading to the professional range of Canon, it adopts some of its key characteristics: the 13 assignable buttons and the internal ND filter are 2 good examples of must-have for those who sell their services. The same goes for the DGO sensor, Genlock Timecode … and battery life!
The internal presence of 2 XLR inputs (with physical control wheels) is another advantage. Of course, Sony offers an XLR module that works on the hot shoe of its device, but the addition of external accessories remains an important constraint: assembly / disassembly, connection, ergonomics, …
Stepping away from the specs sheet, one can also imagine that Canon gave its C70 the durability and reliability that made the Cinema series so successful.
Another point to consider: the fleet of optics available to the user. This is undeniably one of Canon’s strengths. Whether in the new, rental or used market, Canon lenses are everywhere in abundance.
There remains the overall image quality: the organic aspect of the subject, the skin tones, etc. All these points vary according to the sensitivity of each one. And where some find that the Sony image is too clinical (too sharp, too defined,…) others will say that the Canon image is too soft… I am one of those who think that the image of the C series offers the organic effect most faithful to reality … I am also convinced that a camera is not limited to its specification sheet! So a device that delivers RAW is not necessarily better than those that limit themselves to 10-bit Log 4.2.2 …
THE DEFECTS OF THE C70
Difficult to answer on this point. The first handovers were very short and for some, very supervised. However, some “negative” points emerged from these “tests”.
The absence of RAW obviously marked the spirits. But on the one hand, as mentioned above, this difficult to manage format should be reserved for rather high-end workflows (production, post-production). On the other hand, we understand that from a marketing point of view, the range effect demands limits. So for Raw, head for the C200
On the underside of the camera, the alignment of the screw threads is perpendicular to the axis of the lens. Something unorthodox that could pose some problems securing the C70 to the sole of a tripod.
While the C70 offers a plethora of recording formats and qualities, we note that 4K (DCI and UHD) all intra is limited to … 25 fps. In this configuration, the flow of 410 Mbs is ensured. In 4K, higher frame rates require encoding in Long GOP. This can possibly pose certain problems of precision during the assembly phase …
The only additional option associated with all intra is 2K up to 50 fps (60 fps in ntsc).
SHOULD YOU BUY Canon EOS C70?
It’s all about the new stuff right now! The trade war between Canon and Sony is good for the customer, but this second half of 2023 is confusing to say the least. While Canon unveiled its EOS R5 (and R6) in July, it was 2 days before shipments of the 8K device that Sony announced the release of the long-awaited A7 SIII! Just enough time for early adopters to cancel their pre-order for the benefit of new baby Sony. But while the A7 SIII expeditions were due to begin on September 24, it was on this exact date that the event dedicated to … the EOS C70 was set! Will customers who canceled their R5 for an A7 SIII now cancel their Sony pre-order and finally give their money back to Canon?
Well ! Should we buy or not? According to initial feedback, everything suggests that the C70 is a deeply promising camera. Unlike the famous EOS R5, nothing seems to darken the picture. So if you already have a set of EF or RF lenses, maybe now is the time to take the plunge, especially if, as a DSLR or C100 owner, you’ve already been eyeing the C200. …
