With its own format, an ecosystem specific to the brand and a very attractive look, the Chinese firm intends to make people talk about it by attacking the leaders in the sector. That’s Matebook 13.
Choosing a laptop can quickly become a nightmare. There are so many models and brands that we tend to take it more and more according to its look or the fashion style, its logo. There are those who we like because we find them pretty and those who reassure us because they are from a known brand. And then, there are those who arrive from nowhere, or at least that we did not expect in this sector.
This is the case of Huawei. The Chinese manufacturer, known mainly for ten years for its high-performance smartphones, is starting to push together to find a place in the field of laptops. In two and a half years of presence in this sector, the one who had attacked from the outset at the high end, reiterates by beefing up its products with in particular an ultraportable under Windows 10, very attractive, the Matebook 13. This name already resonates with your ears, and looking at it, reminds you of another brand’s model. A random? Probably not. But can this laptop knock the apple off the tree?
Without a doubt, Huawei, which intends to make the match, has taken care of the presentation of its product. The finishes are exemplary and we feel a lot of seriousness in the construction of this 13-inch model with bevelled edges. The aluminum that covers it is pleasant to the touch and does not catch fingerprints. It is light (1.3 kg) and very thin. May be too much. Because, like the one to whom he wants to shade, his connection is reduced to its simplest expression: two USB C ports (one of which is reserved for recharging), a mini-jack and we went around the question. Minimalist, but let’s say sufficient as long as we equip ourselves with a hub. This is the price to pay for having a device that must be forgotten when you transport it.
3: 2 screen, touch and multi-touch
On the screen side, the pleasant surprise comes from its format. The 3/2 ratio benefits when reading web pages or Excel tables, for example, as these may display more rows. Same good news for viewing photos and videos where the black bands will be less present than on a more common 16: 9 display. Also, 88% of the screen is occupied by the image which makes it a champion in its category. Multi-touch, multi-finger operations on the screen will be allowed.
The less pleasant surprise comes from the fact that this IPS panel will be very prone to reflections. So in full sun … In a less extreme environment, however, you can enjoy a well-defined image, a pleasant and backlit keyboard and an efficient trackpad. At the top right, there is a dual-function ignition button since it also acts as a fingerprint reader. Smart, because in just one press, you are on your session.
Huawei share, the brand’s own ecosystem, also teases the competition. Thanks to it, the Huawei phone will be able to communicate directly and instantly with the Matebook 13. Thus, for example, we can transfer a photo from our smartphone to our PC just by placing the first on the second. And it works both ways. Same thing for copying / pasting text or videos, even PDF or Word documents, between the two devices. The possibilities are numerous and very practical.
This Huawei Matebook 13 therefore offers an interesting alternative to the Cupertino brand’s offer, as long as you prefer the Windows environment, and incidentally save a little money.
